Ideally, our goal is to take care of your natural teeth so they last for decades, but a variety of factors can cause the need for a tooth to be extracted. Tooth extraction may be necessary if:
- Your teeth overcrowd your mouth
- A tooth is severely decayed or infected
- Other restorative methods cannot repair your tooth
- Gum disease has caused your tooth to loosen from its socket
The Tooth Extraction Process
Your tooth extraction process should be as straightforward as possible. We value educating our patients about why tooth extraction is necessary, giving an overview of how it can improve and protect your oral health in the long run.
Prior to the Tooth Extraction
Your dentist will have a discussion with you about your medical history and ask for a list of what medication you’re taking. During this time, we are able to answer your questions and provide you with more information about your oral health and the reason for the extraction.
During the Tooth Extraction
Your dentist can begin by administering local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. You may feel some pressure on the area during the procedure once numbed.
Next, your dentist gently loosens the tooth to remove it from the socket. If the tooth is hard to pull, it may need to be broken up into smaller pieces. In some cases, an incision is made in the gum in order to access the damaged tooth.
Recovery from a Tooth Extraction
Your dentist will go over your instructions for optimal recovery. They may also recommend or prescribe painkillers to minimize discomfort and tell you to apply ice to reduce swelling.
During your recovery period, you should try to eat soft foods and continue to brush and floss your teeth, but avoid irritating the extraction site.
Healing Back to Health
After an extraction, we recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment so we can monitor the progress of your healing and the success of the treatment.
